Events

  • April 16, 1178 BC e. - there is a solar eclipse . Perhaps this marked the return of Odysseus , the legendary king of Ithaca , to his kingdom after the Trojan War . He discovers a group of competing suitors seeking to marry his wife Penelope , whom they considered a widow, in order to succeed his throne. He organizes their killings and restores his power. The date is supposed, from a campaign in Homer 's Odyssey , which reads: "And in the heavenly sun, I see, a terrible shadow rises, and under it all the earth is covered with darkness." This occurs during the new moon and at noon, as necessary prerequisites for a total solar eclipse. [1] In 2008, for research purposes, Professor Marcelo Osvaldo Magnasco , an astronomer from Rockefeller University and Konstantino Baikouzis , from the La Plata Astronomical Observatory in Argentina, searched for more evidence. In the text, they interpreted three final astronomical events: the appearance of a new moon on the day of waning (which is required for a solar eclipse); And six days before, Venus could be seen high in the sky, and before that the constellations Pleiades and Bootes could be seen at sunset 29 days earlier. Since these events are repeated at different time intervals, this sequence should be different: professors discovered only one case of this sequence during a search between 1250 and 1115 BC. e., 135 years according to the estimated date of the fall of Troy. This coincides with the eclipse of April 16, 1178 BC. e.
  • 1180-1178 BC e. - The collapse of the Hittite Empire . Their capital, Hattus , will fall around or after 1180 BC. e.
