Soissons county is a French county with the center in the city of Soissons , which existed since the end of the 9th century.

County History

The first authentically known ruler of Soissons was Herbert I de Vermandois , who owned this county between 886 and 898 years. After his death, the county was in the hands of his successor, Count Herbert II de Vermandois , one of the largest feudal lords in the West-Frankish Kingdom in the second quarter of the 10th century. Herbert managed to unite in his hands the huge possessions, which after his death were divided between his sons. The fate of Soissons is unknown. In 966, a certain Waldric was mentioned as a count of Soissons, and in 969, Guy I , who in one of the acts dated June 974, was named the son of Count Herbert. Last time it is mentioned in 986.

After the death of Count Guy I Soisson, probably through marriage, went to the Counts of Bar-sur-Aube : according to the comments to the Acta Sanctorum regarding the life of the Count Simon de Valois, the widow of Guy I, Adelyse, married the Count Nosher I de Bar- sur-aux [1] . According to another version presented in Europäische Stammtafeln , Adelyza was not the widow, but the daughter of Guy I [2] , but it is not known on which sources this hypothesis is based [3] . After the death of Count Nosher, Soisson inherited his third son, Renault I [1] , although there is a version based on onomastic data that he could be the son of Count Guy I [3] . Reno died in the beginning of 1057, his only son Guy II survived his father for a while.

After the death of Guy II in 1057, Soissons inherited his sister Adela, who was married to Guillaume Büzac , one of the sons of Count Wilhelm I d'E . His grandson, Renault III , in 1141 became a monk. He had no children, so he bequeathed Soissons to Yves III de Nel , great grandson of Guillaume Buzak [4]

Yves III de Nel in 1147 as part of the army of Louis VII took part in the Second Crusade . He died in 1178, leaving no children. Soisson was first inherited by his nephew Konon , the son of Raul II , Chatelain Bruges, and after the death of Konon in 1180 his younger brother Raul III .

Raul III in the army of King Philip II Augustus took part in the Third Crusade , during which he distinguished himself during the siege of Acre . Upon returning to France, he was in the close circle of the king, taking an active part in the struggle against England. Later he participated in the Albigoi crusade , as well as in suppressing the revolt of the French barons against Blanca of Castile , the regent of France under the young Louis IX Saint . Raul died in 1235, and was succeeded by his eldest son, Jean II Zaika . He was an associate of King Louis IX, joining the Sixth Crusade in 1248, during which he was captured in 1250, but was soon released and returned to France. In 1265, Jean participated in the conquest of Sicily by Charles I of Anjou , and in 1270 joined Louis IX in the Seventh Crusade , on his return from which he died.

The descendants of Jean II ruled Soisson until the beginning of the XIV century. After the death of Count Hugo, the county inherited his only daughter Margaret , who married Jean de Hainault , Señora de Beaumont, brother of Count Hainault Wilhelm I the Good . After her death, Soisson through marriages passed to different dynasties. In 1367, Count Guy II de Blois-Chatillon , who by the results of peace in Bretigny was one of the hostages in England, unable to pay the ransom for himself, was forced to give Soissons to the king of England Edward III , who passed him on to his son-in-law VII Anderran VII de Coucie . Angerran's daughter, Maria de Coucy , who needed funds for litigation over the stepmother, sold the county to Duke Louis I of Orleans in 1404.

In August 1413, the son of Maria de Coucy, Robert de Bar , as compensation for the loss of the duchy of Bar, which bypassing his rights was transferred to his uncle , received the title of Count Marl, as well as part of Soissons county with the title of Count. The rest of the county of Soissons remained in the possession of Charles of Orleans , and after his son, Louis became king of France in 1498 under the name Louis XII , he was joined to the royal domain .

The daughter of Robert de Bar, Jeanne , in 1435 married Louis de Luxemburg , who was one of the most powerful nobles of France in the reign of Louis XI . In the dowry she brought Soissons and Marl. In 1475, Louis was executed, but in 1376 the titles of Count Soissons and Marl were returned to his son Pierre .

In 1487, Soisson through marriage passed to Francois de Bourbon , Count of Vandoma . Later, Soisson became part of the possessions of the first Prince of Conde , after whose death one of his younger sons, Karl, inherited the county with a number of other possessions. His son, Louis, did not abandon his legitimate sons, so in 1641 Soisson inherited Thomas of Savoy , Prince Carignans, who was married to Louis's sister .

Representatives of the Cariniana house ruled Soissons until 1734, when the last earl, Eugene Jean-François , died childless. After this, the county of Soissons, as an escheat, was annexed to the domain of the King of France .
