The Immigration and Naturalization Service ( INS, Legacy INS ) is the service [1] of the US federal government that was abolished after the September 11 attacks . The functions of this service were transferred from the US Department of Justice to three newly formed services:
- US Citizenship and Immigration Services ;
- US Immigration and Customs Enforcement ;
- US Customs and Border Protection .
