Grindeil Split ( eng. The Greendale Fault ) is right-sided shear geological break in the eastern part of the South Island of New Zealand . Tectonic shifts in this and several adjacent faults caused the 2010 Canterbury earthquake .
Canterbury Earthquake
A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.1 [1] [2] occurred on September 4, 2010 in the Grindale fault at 4:35 am local time (September 3 at 4:35 UTC ) [1] . The earthquake caused significant material damage and caused a power outage in several localities, including Christchurch . The second most powerful earthquake in New Zealand [3] [4] .
