It grows in northern China, in mountainous areas at altitudes of 1600–2700 meters above sea level, occurs in the territory of Gansu , Hebei , Inner Mongolia , Shaanxi , and Shanxi [2] .

A tree with a broad columnar or cone-shaped sparse crown grows to 33 m. The bark of young trees is smooth, the later bark is rough, the color of the bark is gray or brown-gray. Young vegetative shoots are thin, light brown, slightly pubescent along longitudinal grooves with short red hairs, during the reproductive period, thick (up to 6 mm thick), orange-brown. Buds 5–10 mm long, 4–8 mm wide, conical, sometimes slightly resinous, the color approaches the color of the shoots. The needles are 15-25 (-30) mm long, about 2 mm wide, many-sided, arranged radially, with a blunt top, slightly curved, with 5-6 (-8) stomatal lines on each of the faces, bluish-green, shiny. Cones ovoid-cylindrical, 7-10 (-12) cm long, 2.3-3.6 (-4) cm thick, brown, with convex, wide, rounded scales along the edge. Seeds 4-5 mm long, brown; the seed wing is 2–5 times as long as it is longer. The color of the wing is yellowish or reddish brown.
Wood is used for construction, supports, construction of bridges, furniture and for the production of wood pulp. This species is also cultivated for planting and as an ornamental plant.
