Creation History
The APNI database was created on the basis of a 4-volume printed work of the famous Australian systematic botanist (1912-1977) on the taxonomy of Australian plants, edited byArthur Chapman . This publication, with 3,055 pages containing more than 60,000 plant names, was part of the large Australian Biological Resources Study , ABRS .
In 1991, Nancy Burbridge’s work, translated into a database format, was made available online, and the database was transferred to . Two years later, responsibility for the content of the database was transferred shortly before the Center for Plant Biodiversity Research .
Contents
The APNI database covers both valid taxon names and synonyms . In addition, the database contains information on the typification of taxa, bibliographic information, as well as information obtained as a result of “ Censuses of Australian Vascular Plants, ”including information on the distribution of a taxon in Australia. There are links to geographical maps indicating the places of collection of samples of this taxon.
The Australian Plant Name Index , being a recognized authoritative source of information on botanical nomenclature , is a basic component of the project " Australian Virtual Herbarium . " The goal of this joint project is to provide online access to all information and to all samples stored in large Australian herbaria.
APNI is a recognized authoritative source on issues related to Australian plants, not only in taxonomy, but also in areas such as ecology and gardening . In addition, APNI is the basis for Australian environmental law.
