Venue Selection

On September 27, 2008, at the Congress of the European Handball Federation (EHF) in Vienna, it was announced that the final tournament of the European Championship 2012 will be held in the Netherlands . Ukraine also claimed the right to host UEFA EURO 2012, but the Dutch application gained more votes (32 versus 17) [1] [2] .

On June 4, 2012, the Netherlands Handball Union announced its refusal to organize a tournament [3] . The next day, representatives of Denmark , Iceland , Macedonia , Norway , Poland , Russia , Serbia , Slovakia , Croatia and Sweden announced their readiness to host the championship in their countries [4] , on June 6, Romania was also added to the list of interested parties [5] . On June 18, the EHF decided to postpone the tournament to Serbia , which in January of the same year successfully hosted the European Men's Championship [6] .

Qualifying games

The draw for the qualifying tournament was held on April 27, 2011 in Vienna . The Netherlands did not initially participate in the qualification; the Norwegian national team announced the organizer of EURO 2012;

In June 2011, pre-qualification butt matches took place with the participation of four teams, the winners of which (Greece and the UK), along with 26 other teams from October 19, 2011 to June 3, 2012 participated in the main qualification phase. Permits for the final tournament were won by the teams that took first and second places in their groups. On June 18, 2012, after the Netherlands refused to hold the tournament and declared Serbia the host of EURO 2012, the Icelandic national team was added to its participants, having the best result among the teams that took 3rd place in the qualifying groups [6] .
