Haplography is a single spelling of a syllable repeated twice. For example, the English word idolatry ( Russian idolatry ) comes from the Greek eidololatreia , but one syllable is lost due to haplography. Other examples: endontics ← endodontics ( Russian endodontics ), voraphilia ← vorarephilia ( Russian vorarephilia ).
There are many examples of traditional haplography in English. For example, a dot is placed at the end of the affirmative sentence ( full stop / period ). However, if the last word of the affirmative sentence itself ends with a dot (examples: etc., Ltd., Inc. ), the dot at the end of the sentence is omitted. This becomes clearer in comparison with interrogative and exclamatory sentences, in which the question and exclamation marks are not omitted in such cases.
- Philip K. Dick wrote the novel Lies, Inc. ( Russian Philip Dick wrote the novel Cheating Incorporated. )
- Who wrote the novel Lies, Inc. ? ( Russian. Who wrote the novel "Deception Incorporated"? )
- So, it was Philip K. Dick who wrote the novel Lies, Inc. ! ( Russian. And it was Philip Dick who wrote the novel Cheating Incorporated! )
