Biography
Born into a family of immigrants from the Iberian Peninsula . Johann's ancestors bore the name Silge and traded in wine. Making business trips, they were connected with representatives of the German Reformation and, in fear of the Catholic Inquisition, fled from Spain to Germany. In the new homeland, as a result of the mistake made by the official who wrote down their last name, joined the first and last name of the head of the family Pedro (in German - Peter ), they became known as Petersilge .
Johann's father mastered the profession of a jeweler , in 1837 he moved with his family to Warsaw and opened his own workshop. Johann (in Polish - Jan ), did not follow in the footsteps of his father, learned to be a printer in Warsaw and settled in Lodz in 1859. Here he, together with Y. Chachkovsky, founded a lithographic enterprise. Shortly thereafter, he engaged in independent activities and significantly expanded the company, taking up both printing business.
On December 2, 1863, in the amount of 300 copies, the first issue of the bilingual Polish-German newspaper ódzkie Ogłoszenia - Łodźer Anzeiger ( the ód объявления ads ) was published . In 1865, the newspaper changed its name to “ Lodzer Zeitung- Gazeta Łódzka” (Lodz newspaper). In 1866, the newspaper began to be published exclusively in German. The publication quickly gained popularity among readers, due to the fact that not only advertisements and reports on criminal incidents began to appear regularly in it, but also articles on various topics, mainly reprints of metropolitan newspapers and magazines.
On January 6, 1884, Petersilge published the first issue of the Polish-language newspaper Dziennik Łódzki ( The одód diary ).
Johann (Jan) Petersilge, thanks to his contribution to the development of the press in Lodz and the publication of newspapers, as well as the fact that many prominent publishers of Lodz went to school at his enterprises, was recognized as the “father of the Lodz Press” .
He died in 1905 and was buried in the old Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery одód.
