Biography
Douglas studied musical composition at the Birmingham Conservatory with Joe Cutler ( English Joe Cutler ), composed and arranged songs for local groups, and shortly before release in 2008 she assembled the band Judyshouse, in which she was a vocalist and songwriter; Mwula also collaborated with Black Voices, for which she later wrote the Jazz Suite ( English Jazz Suite ) [7] . She worked as a substitute teacher in her hometown and during this period she mastered the GarageBand program, with the help of which she began to create “sound sketches” (in her own expression) [8] .
The singer signed a contract with the British division of RCA Records [9] . Her first public solo performance took place on September 16, 2012 at the iTunes festival, where Mwula opened the concert of Rebecca Ferguson . Releasing the single “She” on October 22, 2012, Mvula continued to work on a long-playing record at Electric Lady Studios in New York under the direction of producer Tom Elmhirst [10] . A month later, the self-titled 4-track mini-album [11] was released . Her debut disc Sing to the Moon , released on March 4, 2013, took ninth place in the British hit parade [12] .
Music Style
Critics put Laura Mwulu on a par with the new British soul singers, followers Amy Winehouse and Adele [3] [10] . A significant influence on Mvula’s work was made by her composer education [11] , and for this reason the singer calls herself “a strange child in rhythm and blues ”. Kate Mossman from The Observer described her music as “if Amy Winehouse and David Axelrod are redid the soundtrack of Gershwin ” [8] . According to David Lester, her songs are closer to the baroque-pop style than to the retro soul [10] .
