History

The Mezetsk Principality, like most of the neighboring Verkhov principalities , recognized the supreme power of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania .

The first prince Mezetskiy is considered to be Andrei Vsevolodovich Shutiha , son of the Tarusian prince Vsevolod Vsevolodovich Orekhva. In 1424, by order of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas, brothers Andrei Shutiha, Prince of Mezetsky, and Dmitry Shutiha, princes of Tarusa, together with other Lithuanian border princes, participated in a successful campaign against the Tatars near Odoev.

Andrei Vsevolodovich Mezetskiy had five sons (Alexander, Fedor, Roman, Ivan and Vasily Blind) and three daughters (Maria, Aksinia and Evdokia). The eldest son Alexander, who became the ancestor of the princes Baryatinsky , died during the life of his father, and his children Gregory, Dmitry, Fedor and Leo took possession of the Baryatin volost.

After the death of Andrei Shutikhi, his younger sons Fedor, Roman and Ivan Andreevich shared the Principality of Mezetsk, each of the brothers owned a third (part) of the fatherly principality. Fyodor Andreevich Mezetskiy (d. Before 1484 ) left behind five sons (Mikhail, Fyodor Sukhoi, Peter, Vasily Kukubyaka and Ivan Govdyrevsky). Roman Andreevich Mezetskiy (d. Before 1484 ) had two sons: Mikhail and Semyon. Ivan Andreevich Mezetskiy died without leaving behind children. A third of the childless Ivan Andreevich was acquired by his nephew Peter Fedorovich Mezetskiy.

In 1484, Mezetsk was jointly owned by five princes: Fedor Fedorovich Sukhoi, Vasily Fedorovich Kukubyaki, Mikhail Romanovich and sons of Ivan Govdyrevsky (Vasily and Roman).

In 1492, Prince Mikhail Romanovich Mezetsky, with his inheritance, transferred from Lithuania to serve in the service of Grand Duke of Moscow Ivan III Vasilyevich . Mikhail Romanovich, having entered the Moscow service, captured and delivered to Moscow his sibling Semyon and cousin Peter Fedorovich, capturing their “dolnitsy”.

In 1494, under the treaty "on eternal peace" concluded in Moscow between the Grand Duchy of Moscow and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Mezetsk princes were granted the right to serve whomever they wanted. In the Lithuanian service, Princes Mikhail, Peter, Vasily Kukubyaka, and Fyodor Sukhoi, Fedorovich Mezetskiy remained, and princes Mikhail and Semyon Romanovich Mezetskiy, Vasily and Fedor Ivanovich Govdyrevsky went to Moscow citizenship.

In 1498, princes Mikhail and Peter Fedorovich Mezetskiy died without leaving offspring. Fyodor Fyodorovich Sukhoi had one son, Ivan, and Vasily Fyodorovich Kukubyaki, Ivan and Mikhail.

In 1503, after the second Russo-Lithuanian war of 1500 - 1503, the Principality of Mezetsk became a part of the Moscow state. The Grand Duke of Moscow Ivan III Vasilyevich in 1504 exchanged their possessions from the Mezetsk princes for the lands of Vladimir Uyezd - Aleksin and Starodub-Ryapolovsky.
