History

The history of the village is related to the activity in the Canterbury region . In the second half of the 19th century, the Canterbury Association distributed land for agriculture; there were sections 26 and 114.

At different times, Sandy Knolls were called differently: Sandy Knowles ( English Sandy Knowles ), Land Knowles ( English Land Knowles ), and so on. There is an opinion that a man named Alexander Knowles once lived there. Nevertheless, most likely the railway station and the village were named so due to the presence of sand bumps that are there near the Uaimakariri river bed.

Section 26, by the river, was leased by Augustus and Charles Perceval on September 7, 1851. Soon they received section 114, located further on the plain, not far from the current railway line. After the lease was made, the Percival brothers transferred both sites to E.M. Templer. It is believed that George Duncan Lockhart ( born George Duncan Lockhart ), who lived at that time on the Coringa estate near the Christchurch , was a Templar partner and rented a Sandy Knolls with him. Lockhart later became a co-owner of the Hakataramea ( Maori Hakataramea ) site in Waitaki County . Around 1854, Templer sold Sandy Knolls to , who, by 1858, had bred about 2,300 sheep on an area of 6070 hectares. In 1863, JT Ford bought the Sandy Knolls for Charles Reed and these lands became part of the Tresillian estate [2] [3] .

Transport

Sandy Knolls Road connects the village with Burnham in the south and in the north, and you can get to Rollston in the southeast via Railway Road.

The Sandy Knolls railway station on the branch operated from October 1899 until March 1, 1970.
