Biography
Born on March 29, 1914 in the village of Solyenoye Zaymishche, Chernoyarsk district, Astrakhan province of the Russian Empire (now the village of Chernoyarsky district, Astrakhan region, Russian Federation ) in a working class family. Russian . He graduated from primary school. Before conscription he worked as a blacksmith.
On 22 August 1941, Chernoyarsk district military registration and enlistment office of the Stalingrad region was drafted into the ranks of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . He graduated from the school junior commanders. In battles with the Nazi invaders, the junior sergeant from July 10, 1942 as the commander of the demining department of the 326th army engineering battalion of the 62nd army , which July 12, 1942 became part of the Stalingrad front . During the battle for Stalingrad, Ivan Stepanovich worked on ferries across the Volga , providing supplies for the army with reinforcements, ammunition, food, and evacuating the wounded. After the end of the Battle of Stalingrad in March-April 1943, engineering units of the 62nd Army participated in the construction of fortifications on the left bank of the Oskol River. On May 5, 1943, for the heroism of soldiers in the Battle of Stalingrad, the 62nd Army was renamed the 8th Guards Army . In July 1943, Sergeant I. Popov on the South-Western Front of the Guard ensured that the Seversky Donets Army forces were forced into the Izyum-Barvenkovskaya operation by units of the Army of the Seversky Donets .
After the conquest and consolidation of bridgeheads on the right bank of the Dnieper, the sappers of the 326th Army Engineering Battalion carried out the crossing of the subunits and armaments near the village of Lotsmanskaya Kamenka . Acting as a senior ferryman, he selflessly worked for two days on the ferry without sleep and rest, having made 36 flights across the Dnieper during this time and carried a total of 75 tons of cargo.
In the winter - in the spring of 1944, on the 3rd Ukrainian Front, he participated in the liberation of Right-Bank Ukraine and part of Moldavia ( Nikopol-Krivoy Rog , Bereznegovato-Snigirevskaya and Odessa operations), forced the Ingulets , Ingul , Southern Bug and Dniester rivers .
In June 1944, the engineering units of the 8th Guards Army were consolidated into the 64th engineering brigade and reformed. Guard Sergeant I. S. Popov was appointed to the post of commander of the demining department of the 270th engineer-sapper battalion. During the Lublin-Brest operation, he participated in forcing the Turya , Western Bug and Vepsh rivers and liberating the cities of Lyuboml and Lublin . He especially distinguished himself when crossing the Vistula River , as a result of which a bridgehead on the left bank of the river, called Magnushevsky, was captured by army units.
On August 1, 1944, he commanded the calculation of the ferry at the ferry near Pshevuz-Tarnovsky . Having loaded artillery armament and personnel on the watercraft, Popov departed from the right bank, but at this time the German attack aircraft attacked the crossing, one of the pontoons caught fire. Guard Senior Sergeant Popov first rushed to the piles of artillery shells and threw a burning box of ammunition into the water. Then he stopped the resulting panic and organized a fire extinguishing. When the fire was extinguished, with its fighters, the holes in the pontoons were repaired and the ferry safely reached the right bank. For courage and heroism shown during the crossing of the Vistula River, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, Guards Senior Sergeant Popov Ivan Stepanovich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
In the 1945 campaign of the Guard, senior sergeant I. S. Popov, during the Warsaw-Poznan , East Pomeranian and Berlin offensive operations, ensured that the 8th Guards Army forced the Pilica , Warta , Obra , Oder , Spree , Dame rivers and Landwer and Teltow , participated in the liberation of the Polish cities of Yedlinsk , Lodz , Poznan , Kustrin and the storming of Berlin .
After the end of World War II was demobilized. He lived and worked in the city of Astrakhan , where he died on March 21, 1985. He was buried in Astrakhan.
