History
It was founded in 1932 as the Moscow Institute of Economic Accounting, in 1948 it was transformed into the Moscow Institute of Economics and Statistics ( MESI ). In 1982, MESI was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor . In 1996, it received university status and was renamed the Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics , while maintaining the same abbreviation.
On March 10, 2015, the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia signed an order on the accession of MESI to G.V. Plekhanov. [1] Earlier, the Academic Councils of educational organizations addressed the proposal to unite universities in the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. The reason for this is unclear. On February 17, the issue of merger was considered at a meeting of the Commission for the Assessment of the Consequences of a Decision on the Reorganization of the Federal State Educational Organization under the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia. According to the results of the discussion of the assessment of all risks, prospects and potential mergers with the participation of representatives of the Department of Education of Moscow, the Council of Rectors of Moscow and Moscow Region, the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, GVV Plekhanov and MESI, the Commission unanimously approved the reorganization by joining MESI to G.V. Plekhanov. A leading economic research university will be created on the basis of the joint university [2] .

Scandal
In January 2014, a deputy of the Riga Duma, Ruslan Pankratov, asked the President of Russia to intervene in the situation with the Riga branch of MESI - Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics. Immediately after assuming the post of director, he conducted an audit of the branch entrusted to him, which not only revealed gross violations of the legislation of the Republic of Latvia, but also raised suspicions of embezzlement of 860,000 euros from the federal state budget of the Russian Federation.
As soon as the management of the head university of MESI became aware of the appeal, all debts with all penalties from October last year were repaid, and even the rent of educational premises for a month in advance was paid. The classrooms opened their doors, teachers and students resumed their studies. Almost immediately, MESI Rector Natalya Tikhomirova signed an order to dismiss R. Pankratov from office with the wording “in connection with improper performance of official duties”. [7]
