Biography

Ivan Kharitonov was born in 1923 in the village of Chesnokovo (now the Mikhailovsky District of the Amur Region ). In April 1942, he was called up to serve in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army of the Mikhailovsky District Military Commissariat. He took part in battles on the Leningrad , 3rd , 2nd Baltic, 1st Ukrainian fronts. In August 1942, he was wounded twice. By March 1944, Sergeant Kharitonov commanded the platoon of anti-tank guns of the 4th Rifle Regiment of the 98th Rifle Division [1] .

On March 11, 1944, Kharitonov suppressed an enemy machine gun with fire from an anti-tank rifle, thereby ensuring the advancement of infantry units. Despite the massive enemy fire, carried out from the battlefield injured battalion commander. By order of the 98th Infantry Division (No. 20 / n) of March 20, 1944, Sergeant Kharitonov was awarded the Order of Glory of the 3rd degree [1] .

On August 24, 1944, during the battles for the city of Elva (now the Tartu County of Estonia ), senior sergeant Ivan Kharitonov, being the commander of the calculation of a 45-millimeter gun, destroyed the Tiger tank and two vehicles with guns attached to them, knocked out the Panther tank and three armored personnel carriers , creating panic in the ranks of the enemy and forcing him to retreat. By order of the troops of the 67th Army (No. 494 / n) of September 27, 1944, Kharitonov was awarded the Order of Glory of the 2nd degree [1] .

In March 1945, during the breakthrough of the enemy defense during the Upper Silesian operation, Kharitonov’s calculation destroyed the enemy’s firing points and his manpower, ensuring the advance of the infantry. On March 19, Kharitonov destroyed about 20 German firing points with direct fire and dispersed a group of enemy infantry of about 50 men. When the enemy began to retreat, Kharitonov skillfully chose a position for his gun and destroyed about 60 enemy soldiers and officers. When the German troops launched a counterattack, he took an active part in its reflection [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 27, 1945, senior sergeant Ivan Kharitonov was awarded the Order of Glory of the 1st Degree for “exemplary performance of combat missions of command on the front of the struggle against the German invaders and showing valor and courage” [ 1] .

After the war, Kharitonov was demobilized. He lived and worked in the Kursk region . He committed murder and attempted murder , for which, on May 18, 1966, the Kursk Regional Court sentenced him to capital punishment . The sentence was executed [1] .

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 30, 1967, Kharitonov was deprived of all titles and awards [1] .

He was awarded the Order of Glory of three degrees, medals "For Courage" , "For the Defense of Leningrad" , "For Victory over Germany" , "In memory of the 250th anniversary of Leningrad" [1] .
