History
In the 17th — 18th centuries, French colonial livery and Spanish silver coins with countermarks were used in circulation. Since 1780, bollon coins of the Kayenne Colony were periodically minted [1] [2] . In 1795, the first paper money of the colony was issued - treasury liabilities of 40 livres [3] .
In 1818, the first coins with the name of the colony "French Guiana" were issued.
On February 2, 1820, instead of the colonial livre, the French franc was declared legal tender.
On July 11, 1851 a private Bank of Guyana was established , which received the right to issue banknotes. The issue of banknotes was started in 1888.
On 28 August 1944, the right to issue was transferred to the Central Box Office of Overseas France, which issued in the same year notes of the Central Box Office of Free France and the Central Box Office of Overseas France. The same banknotes were issued for all overseas colonies that were under the control of the Free French government; in Guiana, they were issued with overprints “GUYANE” or “GUYANE FRANÇAISE”.
The decree of the French government of December 26, 1945 introduced the CFA franc as the currency of the French possessions in Western and Equatorial Africa, and the CFP franc for the Pacific possessions of France. This decree did not apply to Guiana, the French franc was still the legal tender, but the issuance of banknotes in francs specifically for Guiana continued. In 1947, the launch of the new type of banknotes with a single sample overprint - “GUYANE”.
In 1958, the Central Box Office of Overseas France was renamed the Central Bureau of Economic Cooperation, and on January 7, 1959, the Issuing Institute of Overseas Departments of France was created, to which the right to issue was transferred.
In 1961, the production of banknotes for Guadeloupe , Martinique and Guiana was started, on which instead of three different overprints one was applied - “guadeloupe guyane martinique”. Previously issued notes continued to be used in circulation.
Produced from January 1, 1960, the denomination of the French franc was extended to overseas departments only from January 1, 1963 [4] . In 1963, the banknotes (both with the overprint of “Guiana” and the overprint of “Guadeloupe of Guiana Martinique”) were overprinted with a new denomination (in “new francs”), and also started to issue notes of the Overseas Issues Institute of Overseas Departments in new francs (from 1964 years - in francs) with a new type of overprint - “DEPARTEMENT DE LA GUADELOUPE DEPARTEMENT DE LA GUYANE DEPARTEMENT DE LA MARTINIQUE” [5] .
In 1975, the franc of the overseas departments was discontinued, notes of the Issuing Institute were gradually replaced by notes of the Bank of France . Since 2002, the euro is in circulation.
