History

Dornbirn was first mentioned in 895 as Thorinpurion. The name of the city translates as “Toro Settlement,” probably by the name of a local resident. The medieval etymology of the name, dating back to the German Birnen (pear) and due to which the pear tree is depicted on the coat of arms of Dornbirn, is erroneous. Since the end of the XII century, Dornbirn belonged to the counts of Montfort, and in 1380 became part of the Habsburg monarchy.

For centuries, Dornbirn did not have the status of a city, remaining the largest village in Austria and surpassing the surrounding cities by the number of inhabitants. In the 19th century, the textile industry began to develop in Dornbirn; he soon became the textile capital of the region.

In 1901, Dornbirn was finally granted city status.

After World War II, Dornbirn entered the French zone of occupation.
