Biography
Born in Pelotas , in her youth she was an actress traveling with the theater, worked on television and radio , the director of the school for poor children, independently organized by her. She published her first book, Sputniks ( Os Colegas ) in 1972, at the age of 40, after which she took up professional literary activities.
The works of L. Bozhunga combine playfulness, poetic beauty and peculiar humor with the themes of social criticism, love of freedom and sympathy for the vulnerability of the child. Under the conditions of the military dictatorship in Brazil in the 1970s, the writer was forced to touch on many socially significant topics, resorting to various allegories. [1] Fantastic tricks in her books are often used as a way to deal with disturbing personal experiences, or to escape from harsh reality.
A striking example of sharp social criticism in the works of L. Bojungi is the story “Yellow Bag” (“A bolsa amarela”). The big yellow bag that the heroine of the story Rachel carries everywhere with her, keeps all her dreams: she wants to be a boy, grow up and become independent, and she also wants to write books. The bag acts as a symbol of the subconscious desires of the heroine, which is reflected in color: yellow is the color of hope. The leitmotif in the books of Bozhunga is also the sea , its favorite place of action. The sea symbolizes the openness and infinity of space, in comparison with the isolation of the space of the bag.
Among the works of L. Bojungi there are two that reflect the theme of death : “Corda Bamba” (1979), about a young girl who in her fantasies comes to terms with the death of her parents, and “O Meu Amigo Pintor” (“My friend is an artist” , 1987), about a boy who comprehends the inexplicable suicide of his adult friend.
In 1996, after a four-year break, Bozhung published a number of books, in one of which - “Man-Made” (“Feito a mao”) - the writer returns to her childhood.
The works of L. Bojungi are translated into many languages of the world, including English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Norwegian, Swedish, Icelandic, Bulgarian, Czech and Hebrew [2] . In 2015, the book “Yellow Bag” was published in Russia by the publishing house “RIPOL Classic”.
In 1982, L. Bozhung was awarded the Andersen Prize , in 2004 - the A. Lindgren Prize .
