The most famous episode in the history of the fortress occurred in November 1373, when the combined army of Prince Lazar Khrebelyanovich, Ban Tvrtko Kotromanich and the Hungarian troops of King Louis besieged the Great Zhupan Nikol Altomanovich in the fortress. The besiegers used artillery and after a short siege, the zhupans surrendered. He was blinded, and his lands were divided among themselves by the victors. In the middle of the 15th century, Serbia turned out to be part of the Ottoman Empire and in the fortress from 1463 there was a Turkish garrison.
At the end of 1862, the fortress, as well as six other fortifications, was abandoned by the Turkish army in accordance with an agreement with Prince Mikhail Obrenovich . In early 1863, the fortress was blown up to prevent its use for military purposes. As a result, only walls, a tower and a small building inside remained from the fortress. From 1973 to 1980, archaeological and restoration work was carried out in the fortress. At present, in the fortress, improvised theatrical performances are held in the fortress, and its territory has become a favorite vacation spot for Uzhits residents.
