Birth and Origin

According to some sources, Nafi was from the city of Dailam ; according to others, from Nishapur . He is known as the freedman (maul) of the famous associate of Abdullah ibn Umar , the son of the second righteous caliph. Nafi was captured by a child, and Abdullah took him to himself. He knew neither the name of his father, nor any of his family. He grew up and lived in Medina, where he was educated and learned the basics of religion. Abdullah later gave him freedom. Nafi said: “Once I came with Ibn Umar to Abdullah ibn Jafar . He offered Ibn Umar twelve thousand dirhams for me, but he refused and freed me from slavery ” [2] . However, Nafi did not leave Ibn Umar and continued to serve him for 30 years [3] . By his own admission, together with Ibn Umar, he performed the Hajj and will die over thirty times [4] .

Scientific Heritage

Nafi was one of the most famous transmitters of hadiths and lawyers of the Medina of that period. He recounted many hadiths from the words of Abdullah ibn Umar, Abu Huraira , Abu Lubaba ibn Abd al-Munzir , Abu Saeed al-Khudri , Aisha Bint Abu Bakr , Umm Salama and other associates . In turn, Abdullah ibn Dinar , Salih ibn Kaysan , Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri , Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani and others told Hadith from his words. His pupil was an outstanding theologian of his time, Imam Malik [5] . The hadiths transmitted to them were included in all six well-known collections of hadiths.

It is reported that Imam Nafi did not issue fatwas on his own while Salim ibn Abdullah ibn Umar was alive [2] . He enjoyed the great confidence of the Umayyad caliph Umar ibn Abdul-Aziz , who trusted him with various posts. By his order, Imam Nafi went to Egypt to teach the local population about religious rites and traditions. According to Ayyub as-Sahtiyani, Umar ibn Abdul-Aziz also sent Nafi to Yemen to collect zakat [6] .

Praise of Scientists

  • Imam Malik : “It was enough for me that Nafi conveyed from the words of Ibn Umar, and I did not consider it necessary to hear this from anyone else” [7] .
  • Sufyan ibn Uyayna said: “What hadith can be more reliable than what Nafi gave '?” [8]
  • Ibn Sad said: “He was a reliable transmitter and recounted many hadiths” [9] .

Death

Abdul-Aziz ibn Abu Ravvad said: “Being at death, Nafi cried. He was asked:“ Why are you crying? ”He replied:“ I remembered Sad [ibn Muaz] and how the grave compresses [the dead] [11] ” [ 12.] According to some sources, Nafi died in 737 or 738. But most of the legends indicate that he died in 735.
