Description
Weld County is located in the northern part of the state, on the north it borders with Nebraska and Wyoming , on the other sides - with other counties of Colorado. Named after Lewis Ledyard Weld, First Secretary of the Territory of Colorado . The capital of the county is Grills . In the mid-2000s, the rapidly growing city of Thornton from the neighboring Adams County “entered” the territory of Weld County, and now it is considered its largest city. Open water areas occupy 75 km², which is 0.72% of the total area of the district of 10,416 km². Large motorways I-25 and I-76 pass through the district.
History
Weld County, one of 17 "original", was formed on November 1, 1861 and then occupied the entire north-eastern part of Colorado. On February 9, 1872, a significant eastern part was separated from Weld, which became Platte County, but exactly two years later the new district was abolished and Weld returned to its original borders. In February 1887, the eastern part (about half of the area), which became Logan and Washington counties, was again separated from Weld. On February 19, 1889, the southeastern part (about a quarter of the area), which became Morgan County, was separated from the remaining part of Weld [1] .
