Biography
Born in Madrid, his father was a journalist , wrote in the journal Earth , and his mother - a poet. Jose was not even ten years old when he was completely alone: his mother died, his father went missing. Jose Maria was given to an orphanage, the Brown’s Madrid School. At the Sanchez-Silva shelter, he learned to type quickly and learned shorthand , so that after graduating from school, a young graduate was taken to the town hall by a secretary. In 1934, Sanchez-Silva published his first book, The Man in the Scarf .
During the Spanish Civil War, Sanchez-Silva remained in Madrid , working in the Falange underground organization until F.Franco’s troops entered the city. In 1939, he became editor-in-chief of the Madrid magazine “Arriba”, later edited the magazine “C” and received the Francisco de Sales Prize for it. Jose Maria gained fame thanks to the children's book “Marcelino, Bread and Wine” written by him, screened in 1955 by the Hungarian director Ladislao Vaida . This film was a great success. In 1968, Sanchez-Silva received the H.C. Andersen Award , and in 1957 the National Award for Literature.
Creativity
The trilogy "La buritta Non" ("Little donkey without a pair") is about animals. In it, Sanchez Silva tries to explain to children that animals do not receive any awards, except for good attitude and love. The theme of animals is continued in the works “Un gran pequeno” (“Big Kid”) and “Segundo verano de Ladis” (“Second Summer Ladies”). For Sanchez-Silva, the magic that makes life interesting, unpredictable and fun lies in reality itself. This idea underlies the next trilogy. The boy, the hero of the first book - “? Adios, Josefina!” (“Farewell, Josefina”), has an imaginary friend - the whale. Growing up, the boy breaks up with his childhood and Josefina, the whale. The second book , “El espejo habitado” (“Living in a Mirror”), tells the story of a girl who lived three dreams in the looking-glass.
With rare exceptions, the main themes of Sanchez-Silva remain the family, relationships between people, animals; he uses something like “magical realism” to tell young readers the main point about his work, poetry, fun and truth. His most important books are about human relations, the main one among them is “Luiso”. This is a novel about the dangerous life of a child in a family of commercial sailors.
