Asa Zoo ( 広 島 市 安佐 動物 公園 ) is a zoological park in the Asakita area of Hiroshima , Japan . It opened in 1971 and became the 62nd zoo in Japan. One of the largest in the country.
History
Asa Zoo was on September 1, 1971, in a hilly area in northern Hiroshima. At first it was a public institution and was subordinate to the city hall. Subsequently, it was transformed into a private enterprise.
The zoo covers an area of 49.6 hectares, of which 25.5 hectares are reserved for exposure. The zoo features 1,615 animals of 170 species, including baboons, giant turtles, black rhinos, meerkats, flamingos, chimpanzees, Himalayan bears , tangerines, hawks, macaws, Japanese deer , Japanese cranes , storks, Japanese serow , Amur tigers, lions, giraffes, river otters, rhesus macaques, small pandas, Japanese gigantic salamanders . Thematic exposition is divided into three parts: the animal world of Africa, the animal world of Asia and the animal world of Japan.
Asa Zoo became the first zoological park in the world in which it was possible to obtain the offspring of black rhino in captivity. In 1998, artificial chimpanzee fertilization was also carried out here for the first time in the world. The institution conducts scientific work devoted to the study of the fauna of Africa and the protection of rare species of the Japanese archipelago, in particular the Japanese giant salamander. In April 2011, four Amur cubs were born at the zoo.
Asa Zoo is open daily from 9:00 to 16:30. Weekends - every Thursday and December 29 - January 1. Volunteers conduct educational excursions, telling visitors about the life of animals in detail and with a sense of humor. Every summer since 2003, the zoo has night safari for everyone.
