Contents
The novel is a series of diaries in Shigematsu Shizuma and other characters from August 6 to 15, 1945 in Hiroshima and a few years after the disaster, when he and his wife Shigeko became guardians of Yasuko’s niece, and therefore made a commitment to find for her suitable husband.
At the beginning of the novel, three previous attempts to marry Yasuko failed because of rumors that she was in the labor squad of Hiroshima schoolchildren who were in the epicenter of the explosion and that the girl was exposed to the “black rain” that fell after the atomic bomb explosion.
Radiation sickness is one of the main causes of tension, which can be traced throughout the whole story. Shigematsu, himself suffering from radiation sickness, is trying to refute rumors about this disease from his niece, using his and her diary entries for this. But it turns out that Yasuko really suffered from the "black rain".
Screen version
In 1989, Shokhei Imamura made the film Black Rain based on the novel.
