Biography

Born August 27, 1827 , Brook House, Ross-on-Wye , Herefordshire , England [2] . He spent his youth years in Australia. Since 1865, he lived and worked in San Francisco (California, USA) for about 12 years [3] . From 1868–1869, Edwards ran the Metropolitan Theater [4] , and was a founding member of the California Theater , which opened in January 1869 [5] . Edwards was also one of the founders and first vice president of the Bohemian Club, and from 1873–1875 served twice as its president [6] . Edwards spent all his free time studying insects and spent a lot of time at the California Academy of Sciences , studying butterflies under the direction of Hans Hermann Behr , academic curator of Lepidoptera [1] . Elected as a member of the academy in 1867, he concentrated on describing the structure and living conditions of butterflies on the Pacific coast of North America from British Columbia to southern California. In June 1871, Edwards visited the famous American naturalist John Muir in the Yosemite Valley . [7] Later he will name a new species of butterflies in his honor. In 1873, Edwards became the curator of the entomological department of the California Academy and began serving on the publishing committee for the organization of the journal Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences [8] .

In late 1878, Edwards began serving at a theater company in Boston . During the 1880 US Census, Edwards called himself an English-born actor, living with an English wife and a Chinese servant. [9] In 1886, Edwards gave an interview to the weekly theater magazine The Theater (New York), in which he was called unusually popular and brilliant [10] .

Scientific Papers

Edwards described many new species of butterfly species from the families Theclinae , Nymphalidae , Papilionidae, and Lycaenidae . He made the largest contribution to the study and description of Lepidoptera in North America (including Mexico): Arctiidae , Bombycidae , Hepialidae , Sesiidae , Noctuidae , Sphingidae , Lasiocampidae , Dalceridae , Dysderidae , Geometridae , Pyralidae , Saturniidaee , Thurnidaee , Thurnidaee , Thurnidaeee , Thurnidaeee , Thurnidaeee , Thurnidaeee , Thurnidaeee , Thurnidaeee , Thurnidaeee . He called some of the new species female characters of William Shakespeare's plays, such as Ophelia (from Hamlet ), Germany from the comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream , and Desdemona from Othello [12] . For example, Edwards collected, classified and described species of scoop butterflies Catocala ophelia [13] , Catocala hermia in 1880, [14] and Catocala desdemona in 1882 [15] .
