Catocala ophelia

Catocala ophelia (lat.) - a species of butterflies from the family Erebidae . Found in the forests of North America : USA ( Arizona , California and southwestern Oregon ). The wingspan is about 5 cm. The flight of adults occurs from July to October. Females lay eggs on the bark of trees in autumn, development continues after wintering the following spring. Caterpillars feed on oak leaves of the Quercus macrocarpa and Quercus chrysolepis species [1] . The species was described in 1880 by an American actor, a fan of Shakespeare and the entomologist Henry Edwards (1827-1891) and named after Shakespeare's Ophelia [2] .
