Salvador Novo ( Spanish: Salvador Novo ; June 30, 1904 , Mexico City - January 13, 1974 , Mexico City ) - Mexican poet and prose writer, journalist, historian, prominent member of the Contemporaries group.

Biography

 
National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico City

He studied law at the National Autonomous University , but did not finish the course. He did not hide his homosexual inclinations, challenging the then society and at the same time achieving public recognition. Together with Javier Villaurrutia, he founded the Ulysses experimental theater ( 1927 ) and the Sovremenniki magazine ( 1928 ). He did not shy away from administrative activities: he headed the department of public relations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , the publishing department in the Ministry of Education. Over the years, he chronicled the cultural life of the capital, studied the history of Mexico City. In 1947, together with Carlos Chavez, he created the country's most important cultural institution - the National Institute of Fine Arts, until 1952 he headed the theater department in it, worked as a playwright. Author of 11 poetry books, compiler of numerous anthologies. He was extremely active, but in 1969 he suffered two heart attacks , switched to a home lifestyle, however, without stopping hard work. Left a rich archive.

Recognition

Member of the Mexican Academy of Language ( 1952 ). The title of Chronicler of the city of Mexico City ( 1965 ). National Prize in Language and Literature ( 1967 ). In 1968 , a street in the capital was named after the writer.
