Biography
In 1898 he entered the architectural department of the Higher Art School at the Imperial Academy of Arts , which he graduated in the spring of 1906 with the title of artist-architect. He was a member of the Imperial Archaeological Commission and the Russian Archaeological Society . His sketches of ancient monuments are regarded as brilliant examples of architectural graphics [1] .
He carried out measurements and photofixation (about 6000 negatives [1] ) of many wooden churches of the Russian North, first introduced some of them into scientific circulation. Since some of the monuments have so far been lost, an idea of their appearance can now be made only thanks to the research of Mileev [1] .
During a visit to the royal family, Kostroma showed Nicholas II the Cathedral of the Ipatiev Monastery [2] . Based on Milyaev’s research, Academician P.P. Pokryshkin saved the bell tower of the Assumption Church in Arkhangelsk from collapse. Together with N. M. Aristov, he designed the church at the courtyard of the Kalyazinsky Alexander Nevsky Monastery on Martynovskaya Street .
In the last year of his life, he was engaged in excavations of the Church of the Tithes in Kiev. Suddenly died of typhus at the age of 35. In obituaries, Mileyev’s untimely death was noted as a major loss for Russian art culture, for his scientific works “were of high cultural importance, and were not everyday work, taken to create a clientele for himself” [1] .
