Siebold Memorial Museum

Siebold Memorial Museum

Siebold Memorial Museum ( シ ー ボ ル ト 記念 館 Xi: Boruto Kinenkan ) was opened in Nagasaki in 1989 in honor of Philip Franz von Siebold , who made a great contribution to the development of modern science in Japan . The building was built in the image of the scientist’s house in Leiden and is located next to the site of its original clinic and boarding school, known as Narutaki Yuku.

The museum has 206 exhibits divided into six categories, describing the six-year stay of Philip Franz von Siebold in Nagasaki, during the so-called “Siebold incident”, and his great work for the benefit of Japan. It also shows the family tree and personal items of his wife, Japanese Taki and daughter Ina, who became the first female doctor in Japan.
