The serrated margin ( ora serrata ) is the transition of the visual part of the retina ( pars optica retinae ) into the blind part of the retina ( pars caeca retinae , Latin caecus - blind), which covers the ciliary body and the iris . The dentate edge also coincides with the transition of the choroid to the ciliary body. The jagged edge is located approximately 8.5 mm behind the limbus .
Only in this place are the outer and inner layers of the retina tightly interconnected, in others - weakly. This creates prerequisites for retinal detachment .
The retinal pigment epithelium and the outer boundary membrane pass into the tissue of the ciliary body. Other layers of the retina correspond in this place to the non-pigmented epithelium, which also covers the ciliary body and is responsible for the synthesis of aqueous humor .
