“Hitchhiking” [1] (working title - “Hippy Travel”) is a film directed by Alexander Pankratov , made by him in his novel “Hippie Travel to the People’s Republic of China”. Production - autonomous non-profit organization “Master Cinema” at OJSC “ Sverdlovsk Film Studio ” (Russia). The premiere took place on November 20, 2009 at the Moscow House of Cinema [2] .

Story
USSR of the early 1980s. The KGB general warns a major official of the city committee of the CPSU of Leningrad that his daughter is part of an informal youth group professing hippie philosophy. In addition, she plans to travel with other members of the commune to Tibet, to the mythical country of Shambhala , which involves illegal border crossing. The father of a girl known to friends as Lyon (Vodzinskaya) is trying to interfere with her daughter's trip and romantic feelings for the group leader - Sineglazom (Solomykin). Nevertheless, the guys manage to go on a trip, during which each of them - Bagheera , Buddha , Partaigenoss , Marishok - opens in its own way. In this group, a previously convicted young man named Cartilage stands out in contrast, who is far from the attitude and goals of his fellow travelers. After some time, friends reach one of the sections of the USSR border where they are stopped by a border detachment. Cartilage unexpectedly for everyone grabs a gun and starts to shoot. Border guards return fire: from falling into the head, Lyon dies, Sineglazy falls into the water of a mountain river. In the cell for detainees at the border outpost, the surviving young people are trying to remember the words of a previously unknown prayer.
The theme of the film is the confrontation of dreams and reality. A dream is mountains, love, God. The nature with which we want to merge. And the reality is criminals, police, state power, official ideology. In the film, the dream prevails, but formally the reality wins.

Criticism
“Rossiyskaya Gazeta”, commentator Valery Kichin: “The picture is exotic <...> Heroes nevertheless reach the Chinese border - on foot, by hitchhiking, and around the unthinkable gave, and the guys are merged with nature. They are inscribed in it, and the picture is very delicate. <...> I (the film) made me recall the “ Hair ” of Milos Forman : there is also an informal youth fraternity, which contrasted itself with society ” [3] .
Additional Information
Full-scale shooting of the film was carried out in the Ulagansky region of the Altai Republic [4] .
