Leroy "Roy" F. Aarons ( eng. Leroy "Roy" F. Aarons ; December 8, 1933 - November 28, 2004 ) - American journalist, editor, writer, playwright. He founded the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Journalists (The National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association - NLGJA) [2] . He is also one of the founders of the Robert Maynard Institute for Journalism Education . In 2005, Leroy Aarons was introduced to the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Journalists.

Early life
Aarons was born in Bronx , New York on December 8, 1933 in a family of Latvian immigrants. His mother died of stomach cancer when LeRoy was 3 years old. Aarons graduated with distinction from Brown University and received a master's degree from the Faculty of Journalism at Columbia University ( en: Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism ) [2] . He served in the US Navy. In 1962, Aarons was hired by The Washington Post , where he worked for 14 years [2] .
