As a student, he took part in production surveys on the construction of the Moscow Canal . In 1940 he was enrolled in the correspondence postgraduate study of the Moscow State Institute of Engineering. In 1937-41, he led geological engineering surveys in Moscow and the Moscow Region. Since 1941 he has been working as an assistant, and then as an assistant professor at the Department of Hydrogeology .

Participation in the Great Patriotic War

By the beginning of the war, Kotlov was already a major specialist in the field of engineering geology. In July 1941, an all-Moscow group was organized at the Moscow Polytechnic Institute , which included about 60 specialists - geologists and hydrogeologists, who not only participated in the defensive work, but also advised the builders when creating several defense lines on the outskirts of Moscow. The group, which actually became the military-geological headquarters of the defense of Moscow, consisted of such famous scientists as corresponding members of the USSR Academy of Sciences F. P. Savarensky , G. N. Kamensky , doctors of sciences E. V. Shantser , I. Ya. Panteleev, F.F. Laptev and others. They compiled military-geological maps of the sources of reserve water supply in Moscow, maps of deposits of building materials, engineering and geological conditions of fortification construction.

In October 1941, workers' communist battalions were formed, consisting of Muscovite volunteers. On October 17, 1941, Kotlov voluntarily entered the ranks of the Red Army as part of the Moscow Communist Division . Place of call: Krasno-Presnensky RVK .

On January 15, 1942, on the basis of the Moscow Communist Division, the 130th Rifle Division was formed, with which Kotlov. sent to the North-Western Front , in the area of Demyansk "boiler" as part of a 3-strike army . He took part in hostilities from 02/19/1942. Major Kotlov in the division held the positions of senior political instructor and chief of engineering service (since April 1942).

In May 1942, in the area of Bolshoi and Maloe Vragovo began a general attack on the enemy’s Demyan group. Under the direct supervision of F.V. Kotlov, a group of 200 sappers, under enemy fire, pulled out 5 T-34 tanks stuck in a swamp between May 20 and 21, 1942. For this feat Kotlov F.V. 06/14/1942 was presented to the Order of the Patriotic War II degree.

In August 1942, near the Robya river (Starorussky district of the Novgorod region) Kotlov F.V. organized the construction of a bridge on the opposite bank, occupied by the Germans.

On December 8, 1943, the 130th SD was renamed the 53th Guards. Under the guidance of Kotlov F.V., the occupied borders were secured, mining of dangerous sections, demining, construction of bridges and roads, re-equipment of enemy fortifications. By order of May 14, 1943, Major Kotlov was awarded the Order of the Red Star.

Post-war years

In the fall of 1943, Kotlov was transferred to the special geological mapping trust “Spetsgeo” by the head of the military geology department. On December 1, 1943, he assumed the duties of director of the Moscow Institute of Information Technology. In 1946 he defended his thesis "The cultural layer of Moscow and its engineering and geological characteristics." In October 1949 he was seconded to the doctoral program of the Laboratory of Hydrogeological Problems named after F. P. Savarensky Academy of Sciences of the USSR with a degree in Engineering Geology. Since 1952, an employee of the aforementioned laboratory. Since 1952, he worked at the Laboratory of Hydrogeological Problems of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR named after F. P. Savarensky [1] . C 1963 Kotlov - head of the department, in recent years, professor-consultant of the PNIIIS. In 1963 he defended his doctoral dissertation "Problems of Engineering Geology of Moscow". Kotlov conducted engineering-geological surveys of more than 20 cities of the USSR, he paid special attention to Moscow. Died F.V. Kotlov 03/12/1985, in Moscow
