Kochubey, Peter Arkadevich

Pyotr Arkadievich Kochubey (June 17 (29), 1825, Moscow [1] [K 1] - December 22, 1892 (January 3, 1893), Zgurovka of the Poltava province [3] [4] ) - Privy Councilor (1890), Honorary Member of the St. Petersburg Academy Science (1876), one of the founders of the Museum of Applied Knowledge in St. Petersburg (1868), chairman of the Russian Technical Society (1870 or 1882–1892) [1] . Biography

Peter Arkadievich Kochubey was born on June 17 (29), 1825 and was the eldest son in the family of Senator Arkady Vasilievich Kochubey and Sofya Nikolaevna, nee Princess Vyazemskaya . On the father's side, there is the grandson of Major General Vasily Vasilievich Kochubey (1756-1800) and Elena Vasilyevna, nee Tumanskaya (d. 1836), on the line of his mother, Senator Prince Nikolai Grigoryevich Vyazemsky (1769-1846) and Ekaterina Vasilyevna Vasilchikova (1773/1774 -1816).

He received primary education until 1839 at home under the guidance of his father. In 1841 - fireworks of the Artillery School. After graduating from the Mikhailovsky Artillery School in 1845, he was left at the “Officer Classes”. Then in the years 1846-47, P. A. Kochubey studied in Lutih and Paris. Having passed the final exam, Kochubey received the post of teacher of chemistry and practical mechanics at the Mikhailovsky Artillery Academy , and also transferred to the guards horse artillery, where he was seconded to the headquarters of the field general . In 1857 he retired.

He was one of the founders of the Museum of Applied Knowledge in St. Petersburg (1868). In 1870-1892 [K 2] he was elected chairman of the Russian Technical Society, to whose work he made a significant contribution. Peter Arkadevich collected a collection of silverware and a significant collection of art products [1] . In 1860 he joined the Imperial Mineralogical Society. In the house of Kochubey on Moika 69, there was a mineralogical cabinet, in the windows of which samples of gold, platinum, silver and other ores were presented [5] . The mineral collection, which was one of the largest, was later purchased from his son Vasily and is now in the collection of the Mineralogical Museum named after A.E. Fersman [6] . In Kochubey’s house, “mineralogical Fridays” were held, attended by academicians N. I. Koksharov , A. V. Gadolin and others.

In honor of Kochubey, the mineral kochubeit was named, as well as a druse of alexandrite crystals, called “Drusa Kochubey” or “Kochubeyevsky druse” [7] .

Pyotr Arkadievich Kochubey was the author of several publications: “Memoirs of Pyotr Arkadievich Kochubey about a business trip given to him by Emperor Alexander II in the winter of 1856” (in two parts), “Description of the most remarkable laboratories in Germany and Belgium”, “Essay on the activities of P. A. Kochubey afforestation in the Poltava province ” [8] .

Peter Arkadievich Kochubey died on December 22, 1892 (January 3, 1893) in his estate Zgurovka in the Poltava province.

Marriage and children

Wife (from January 14, 1851) - Countess Varvara Aleksandrovna Kusheleva-Bezborodko (12/21/1829 - 11/01/1894), maid of honor of the court, daughter of Alexander G. Kushelev-Bezborodko and Princess Alexandra Nikolaevna Repnina-Volkonskaya. Died of brain inflammation in Nice. In marriage were born [9] :

  • Arkady (d. 1859 as a child)
  • Demian (d. 1856 infant)
  • Sofia (d. 1860 as a child)
  • Love (1861-1884) - not married.
  • Vasily (1868-1940) - since 1890 he was married to his second cousin Varvara Vasilievna Kochubey (1869—?), The daughter of Vasily Vasilievich Kochubey and Maria Ivanovna Dragnevich.
