Leonid Golovlev was born on October 7, 1916 in the village of Big Kirill (now the Roslavl district of the Smolensk region ) into a peasant family. He graduated from an incomplete secondary school in his native village and the school of factory apprenticeship in Roslavl . He worked at the Roslavl car repair plant and car repair base. In 1938, Golovlev was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. He graduated from the school of junior commanders. He was demobilized, worked in fisheries in Astrakhan . In June 1941, Golovlev was again drafted into the army and sent to the front. He took part in the battles on the Voronezh and 1st Ukrainian fronts. By September 1943, Lieutenant Leonid Golovlev commanded a machine gun company of the 69th Mechanized Brigade of the 9th Mechanized Corps of the 3rd Guards Tank Army of the Voronezh Front. He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper [1] .

On the night of September 21-22, 1943, a company of Golovlyov, despite massive enemy fire, crossed the Dnieper on improvised means in the vicinity of the village of Zarubintsy, Kanevsky district, Cherkasy region of the Ukrainian SSR . Golovlev was the first to reach the western bank of the river and led his fighters to storm the enemy fortifications. During the battle for the bridgehead, the company supported the actions of neighboring infantry units with its fire. During the assault on the village of Maly Bukrin , when the company was laid down under a massive machine-gun fire, Golovlev, despite the risk to his life, was the first to attack and carried away the fighters. In a hand-to-hand battle directly in Maly Bukrai, a company destroyed 79 enemy soldiers and officers [1] .
