Professional career
He made his debut in 1991 in a fight with James Wilder , whom he defeated by refusing to continue the fight in round 4.
In 1993, Mathis fought with Mike Dixon , defeating him by unanimous decision.
In April 1993, Mathis fought with Mike Hunter . Hunter won by a close unanimous decision, but Hunter’s doping test tested positive for cocaine. The fight was declared invalid.
In February 1994, Mathis won by unanimous decision Judges Tyrell Biggs .
