History
According to various sources, the Armenians in the city of Kamenetz-Podolsky settled in the XI century [1] [2] [3] - XIII century . In the 17th century , there were already 1,200 Armenian families in the city [2] . Armenians mainly settled in the southeastern part of the city. Until now, the city has a quarter known among locals as “Armenian” [4] . Composing a significant part of the population of the city of Kamenetz-Podolsky , townspeople of Armenian ethnicity were involved in its cultural, economic and military life. In 1581 [5] (or in 1638 [2] ), the Armenian inhabitants of the city built a well, popularly called the “Armenian Well” [5] . The building was sponsored by the wealthy Armenian Narzes [2] [6] . The water in the well turned out to be unsuitable for drinking due to the large amount of salts leached from the rock, therefore it was used for other purposes.
During the Second World War , during the German occupation of the city, the well was badly damaged. The Armenian well, restored in 1960 [2] , is protected by the state as a monument of antiquity [5] .
Architecture
The Armenian well is a low eight-pointed tower, in which there is a well cut in a solid rock with a width of 5 and a depth of over 30 meters [5] . The size of the tower above the well is 12 × 12 meters. The height of the building is 14, and the walls are 8 meters. Outside, on the walls of the tower, there are pilasters that rest against the base at the basement. In the eastern part of the structure there is an entrance door, and in the southern, northern and western walls of the tower, at a height exceeding the height of a person, there are round windows with a diameter of about 1 meter [2] .
