Geography

Kullu is located at an altitude of 1220 meters. It lies on the banks of the Beas River . The main tributary, Sarvari, leads west into the little-studied and steeper Lug valley. To the east of Kullu lies a wide mountain range with rural temples, Biji Mahadev, Mountain Nag and Puid. Behind the ridge lies the Manikaran Valley on the Parvati River, which flows into the Beas in Bhuntara. Historically, Kullu had access from Shimla through the Siraj Valley and through passes in the west leading to Jogindernagar and the Kangra region. To the north is the famous city of Manali , not far from which through the Rohtang Pass you can get into the Lahul and Spiti Valley. When climbing up the windward side of the ranges, you can see an unusual change in climate, and get on the leeward and drier plateaus north of Manali.
