Biography
Shimen Djigan was born in 1905 in Lodz in the family of a Russian Army soldier Moishe Djigan ( Polish: Moszek Dzigan , 1867-1942). After the outbreak of the First World War, he entered the disciples to the tailor.
In 1927 he began to act as a comedian in Yiddish. In 1927, he became acquainted with Yisroel (Srulik) Schumacher and began to perform on stage with him. Their work was noticed by Moishe Broderzon and offered them a job at the literary cabaret "Ararat", which was founded in Lodz. Later, the literary cabaret was transformed into the Ararat Jewish Theater. After the closure of the theater, Shimon Djigan together with Israel Schumacher organized a comedy duet "Djigan and Schumacher". This duet appeared in Yiddish and became one of the most famous prewar comic duos in this language.
In 1935, Shimon Djigan founded his own Nowości cabaret theater in Warsaw . C 1936 began acting in feature films in Yiddish, where he played several major roles. In the film “ Una heime ” ( Without Home ), along with Shimon Jigan, the main role was played by Jewish actress Vera Gran .
After the start of World War II, Djigan, along with Schumacher from Warsaw, fled to Bialystok , where he soon moved to the territory of the Soviet Union . Parents died in the ghetto of Lodz. [2] Until June 1941, Djigan and Schumacher toured with a duet in Minsk , Moscow , Leningrad , Kiev and Kharkov . After the start of World War II, Shimon Jigan tried to join the Anders Army . He was accused of desertion and placed in a labor camp. Since 1942, Djigan and Schumacher have been in a labor camp near Tashkent .
In 1946, Shimon Djigan was released from the labor camp and moved to Moscow. In 1948, he returned to Poland and in 1950 emigrated to Israel, after which he continued to perform with the Schumacher on theater stages in Europe, the USA .
In 1961, after the death of Israel Schumacher, the duet “Djigan and Schumacher” fell apart.
In 1977, Shimon Djigan created his own television show, Evening with Djigan, on Israeli television.
On April 5, 1980, Shimon Djigan suffered a heart attack during his new presentation. He returned to Tel Aviv and died on April 14, 1980, and was buried in the Kiryat Shaul cemetery.
