Creation History

The cartoon was created as additional material for the DVD-edition of the second "Ice Age ". Screenwriters at Blue Sky Studios considered various ideas, including a short film about the possum Crash and Eddie, but focused on the story of Scrath's time travels proposed by Chris Renault. He wanted to tell a story that would be unexpected, but at the same time meet the basic features of Scrat. The creation of a short film took eight months for the authors, during which they also completed work on Global Warming and switched to Horton . The work was completed in June 2006, and a few months after the premiere, unexpectedly for the authors, the cartoon was nominated for an Oscar for the best animated short film [3] .

Story

A scrat , running across a snowy plain in search of a secluded place for his acorn, notices a luminous object in a snowdrift and digs out a futuristic time machine from there. Under the ice, a human skeleton is visible in a white coat and glasses. Scrat inadvertently starts a time machine, and transfers it with an acorn to the Middle Ages . When transferred, an acorn gets stuck between two stones. Scrat cannot pull out the acorn and sees a sword nearby, stuck in a stone. Scrat draws his sword, which causes aggression archers remaining behind the scenes. Fleeing from arrows, he again resorts to a time machine and is transferred to the arena in ancient Rome. Seeking to get to the acorn as soon as possible, he does not notice either a competition of chariots, one of which runs into him, or a lion released into the arena. Scratus escapes from the lion, falling on the iceberg a few seconds before the collapse of the Titanic ; further, having got into the first part of the cartoon, he fights with himself for the only acorn. In search of an acorn, Scrath is transferred to increasingly dangerous situations in which he would be killed if he did not activate the time machine on time: to the launch pad of a rocket with a countdown launched, to Franklin’s experiment with a kite (and almost gets an electric shock), on the tracks in front of the train, to explode the atomic bomb, to the jewelry store, to the women's locker room, during the French Revolution (where he appears under the falling blade of the guillotine ) and in front of the groin of Michelangelovsky David (this does not threaten him, but he’s rather embarrassed).

Finally, Skrath is in the park and sees a large oak tree with many acorns. He throws his acorn scornfully. So that the time machine does not send him on a further journey, he breaks it. However, upon closer inspection, it turns out that the oak tree is a monument standing on a small green corner in the middle of the futuristic industrial world. The viewer sees the tablet “Here Stood the Last Oak Tree” ( Rus. Here was the last oak ). Meanwhile, the damaged time machine is triggered for the last time and sends Scrat's only acorn on yet another time travel. Scrat, stuck in the future, screams disappointedly.
