History
The departments of Ariano Irpino and Lacedonia were founded at the end of the X - beginning of the XI century .
The name of the city Ariano originates from the ancient Roman Ara Jani . So far, no historical documents have been found that speak of the spread of Christianity in this territory. There is an assumption that Christianity in Ariano gained distribution not earlier than the 4th century . For the first time, the department of Ariano was mentioned in the X century in the bullae of Pope John XIII ( 965 , 972 ), in which it is referred to as the bishopric-suffraganism of the Benevento archdiocese .
The first famous bishop of Ariano was Maynardo di Poitiers. Under him, in 1070 a cathedral baptistery was built. The following year, along with Pope Alexander III , he took part in the consecration of the church in Monte Cassino . Tradition lists the names of a number of bishops who occupied the chair of Ariano do Mainardo.
The Department of Lacedonia was founded in the 11th century . Desiderio, the first known bishop of Lacedonia, is mentioned in a document in 1082 , but it is likely that he also had predecessors. Among the bishops of Lacedonia, the most famous are the names of Guglielmo Neritono (1392), Antonio Dura (1506), Gianfranco Carducci (1564), mathematician Marco Pedacchi (1584), the scientist Giacomo Candido (1606), Giacomo Giordano (1651), who built the bishop's palace the new cathedral, Benedetto Bartolo, who was kidnapped by bandits and saved by the Marquise di Carpi, Morea (1684), which abolished a number of pagan holidays that were celebrated on the eve of the Epiphany , and began the construction of a new cathedral.
Under Bishop Francesco Ubaldo Romanzi (1798), the diocese of Lacedonia was united with the diocese of Trevico, a bishopric-suffraganism of the archdiocese of Benevento, founded in the X century.
The territory of the diocese of Lacedonia was repeatedly subjected to earthquakes , the most destructive of which were the earthquakes of 1694 and 1702 .
The dioceses of Ariano and Lacedonia, which at that time were the bishoprics of Suffraganism of the archdiocese of Konza and Campania, were united on September 30, 1986 into a single diocese. Prior to this, on March 9, 1974, they were united on the principle of in persona episcopi .
