History

The Ends Department was founded in the VIII century . The first mention of the diocese in the document dates back to 743 . This is a document confirming the participation of Bishop Pelagius at the Council of Rome this year.

In the second half of the 11th century , the Ends department was elevated to the rank of archdiocese-metropolitanate. At the same time, not earlier than 1076, the department of Nusco was founded.

The departments of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi and Bizacci were founded in the 12th century. In 1122 (1123), the Cathedral was consecrated in End.

In 1513, the dioceses of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi and Bizacci were united on the principle of aeque principaliter , but in 1517 they were separated, then in 1534 they were united again, which was confirmed in 1540 .

In the first half of the 18th century , the diocesan seminary was founded at the end of Bishop Francesco Paolo Nikolai.

On June 27, 1818, the End diocese was united with the diocese of Campania, which was founded on June 15, 1525 . In the same year, the diocese of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi and the diocese of Nusco were expanded to include part of the territory of the dioceses of Monteverde and Montemarano.

On September 30, 1921, the diocese of Campania was restored, and the diocese of Enda was united on the principle of aeque principaliter with the dioceses of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi and Bizacci.

On August 4, 1973, the Diocese of Nusco was united on the principle of persona episcopi with the Archdiocese of Enda and the Dioceses of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi and Bizacci.

On April 30, 1979, the Archdiocese of Ends lost the status of the Metropolitanate of Bull Quamquam Ecclesia of Pope John Paul II .

During the earthquake of 1980, the cultural heritage of the diocese was badly damaged, among the many churches the ancient cathedral at the End was destroyed.

On September 30, 1986, the Archdiocese of Ends and Dioceses of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, Bizacci and Nusco were completely united into a single diocese, taking their current name, and included in the Metropolitanate of Benevento .

On October 18, 1995, the diocese included parishes in the commune of Rocca San Felice , previously owned by the diocese of Avellino . On January 25, 1998, the diocese included parishes in the communes of Frigento, Sturno, Gesualdo, and Villamain, previously also belonging to the dioceses of Avellino, and the parishes in the municipality of Vallata were transferred to the diocese of Ariano-Irpino-Lacedonia .
