Portuguese-Turkish wars or Portuguese-Ottoman wars [1] [2] [3] - a series of different military clashes between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Ottoman Empire , or European countries and the Ottoman Empire, in which the Portuguese Armed Forces participated. Some wars were short, others lasted for years. Most of the conflicts occurred in the Indian Ocean during the colonial expansion of Portugal . Local countries also participated in these wars. Since 1538, the Sultanate of Adal , with the help of the Somali state of Ajuran and the Ottoman Empire, fought against the Ethiopian Empire . The Ethiopians were supported by the Portuguese, commanded by Cristovan da Gama , the son of the famous explorer Vasco da Gama . This war is known as the Adalo-Ethiopian War .
