Biography

Orthodox. From the nobles of the Vologda province. The son of the founder of the Tula Cartridge Plant of the actual state adviser Fedor Grigoryevich von Gillenchmidt . Younger brother Jacob - lieutenant general, St. George cavalier.

He graduated from the Page Corps (1887) in 1st category, was released as second lieutenant into the 1st horse artillery battery and was seconded to the Life Guards of the Horse Artillery Brigade .

Ranks: lieutenant (1891), staff captain (1897), captain (1898), colonel (1902), major general (1908), lieutenant general (1915).

He commanded a spare horse-artillery battery (1901-1905), the 4th horse-artillery division (1905-1907), the 2nd division of the life guard of the horse-artillery brigade (1907-1908), the 23rd artillery brigade (1908— 1910) and the Life Guards of the 2nd Artillery Brigade (1910-1913). March 21, 1913 was dismissed from service for domestic reasons by a lieutenant general with a uniform and a pension.

With the outbreak of World War I he was returned to service with the same rank. August 15, 1914 appointed artillery inspector of the 26th Army Corps , and on May 16, 1915, was promoted to lieutenant general with approval in office. Was granted by St. George's Weapon

 Because being an artillery inspector of the 26th Army Corps in a battle on August 21, 1915 near the village of Smolniki, being at the front observation post in the field of real gun fire, he united a group of batteries under his command, supervised their actions and combined heavy fire and light artillery silenced German artillery, which made it possible for our infantry to inflict a decisive defeat. 

On December 29, 1915 he was appointed artillery inspector of the 2nd Guards Corps , in which position he held until August 23, 1917. In 1919 he was the head of the Helmstedt officer camp created by the Red Cross in Germany, which contained officers of the Ukrainian state’s army evacuated at the end of 1918.

In exile in France. Consisted of the chairman of the Page of the Union and the comrade of the chairman of the Guards Association.

He died in 1942 in Paris. He was buried in the cemetery of Saint-Genevieve-des-Bois . He was fond of horse riding, won many prizes.

Family

He was married to Nadezhda Petrovna Olkhovskaya (1888-1950). Their son:

  • Peter (1910-1984), graduate of the Technical School of Aeronautics and Aeronautical Instruments, design engineer, entrepreneur.
