About the album
Like Petty’s solo album Full Moon Fever , Into the Great Wide Open was produced by Traveling Wilburys fellow musician Jeff Lynn . The album became quite successful, having received the status of gold in Germany [1] and Switzerland [2] , platinum in the UK [3] and Sweden [4] and 2 × multi-platinum in Canada [5] and the USA [6] . The songs “Out In The Cold”, “Learning To Fly”, “King s Highway” and “Into The Great Wide Open” took the leading positions in the Mainstream Rock chart [7] . Johnny Depp starred in a music video for the latter, who had free time on the set of the film " Arizona Dream " by Emir Kusturica .
After several fairly average albums, Into the Great Wide Open finally returned The Heartbreakers to its critics. Entertainment Weekly 's Dave DiMartino called it “Petty and the band’s most classic album in 15 years.” [8] Rolling Stone critic Parker Paterbauch, giving Into the Great Wide Open 4 stars out of 5, placed him in a niche between the albums Full Moon Fever and Damn the Torpedoes [9] . Allmusic reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine also noted the similarity of Into the Great Wide Open to Full Moon Fever , albeit with less enthusiasm. According to Erlewine, the album is pleasant, but not diverse enough [10] .
