Biography

Born in the family of Israeli tailor Rapkin and Ida Sorkina. In 1911, fleeing the pogroms, he emigrated with his parents to France , since 1913 he lived in Montreal ( Canada ), where he entered the university’s medical faculty. He completed his education in Paris . Rockefeller Sorbonne scholarship holder for scientific research. He worked in the research laboratory of Professor R. Wurmster, since 1930, he served as deputy director of the Department of Biophysics of the Institute of Physical Chemistry of Biology. In 1933 he created the French Committee for the reception of foreign scientists and the organization of their activities, assisted thirty thousand scientists from different countries. During the Second World War, he helped scientists and cultural figures to evacuate from occupied France to the United States . Since 1944 he worked at the Pasteur Institute in Paris , implemented a plan for the reorganization of research work. He was awarded the Legion of Honor (1947).
