The length of Sarata is about 15 km. The valley is V-shaped, in the upper reaches it is gorge-like. The channel is rapids. Often there are floods, sometimes devastating.
The main sources of Sarata are located on the southern slopes of the Tomnatikul ridge ( Yalovichichir mountains ), and southwest of the Semenchuk pass. It flows first to the south, then abruptly turns to the west, and within the village of Sarata to the north-west. Then it flows between the Black Dol ridges (in the south-west) and Yarovets (in the north-east). At the mouth it merges with the Perkalaba River, giving rise to the White Cheremosh ( Danube basin). Sarata is the right source of the White Cheremosh, Perkalab - the left. Some of the tributaries of Sarata originate in Romania .
- The origin of the name is explained by the Thracian sar , sara , that is, "stream, river, stream, source."
