Biography
He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Christian Schussel. As an illustrator, he worked primarily with Harper's Weekly magazine . He moved to New York in 1871. His illustrations were heavily influenced by French and German black and white art. He illustrated books by famous authors, including Shakespeare , wrote on historical subjects. From 1878 he lived in Great Britain ; knighted. In 1890, Edwin married Gertrude Mead, the daughter of a wealthy New York merchant. In 1898 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts , in 1902 he was an official portrait painter at the coronation of Edward VII .
After the death of Edwin, Gertrude was actively engaged in preserving the heritage of her husband.
Creativity
Among the most famous works is the fresco “The Quest for the Holy Grail” (1901) in the Boston Public Library , a fresco in the Pennsylvania State Capitol.
