Main story
Members of Umbrella Academy, a disbanded superhero team, meet again after the death of their adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreaves. Hargreaves, an alien who lived under the guise of a well-known entrepreneur, gathered members of the Academy immediately after their birth and prepared them to save the world from an unknown threat. After his death, the disciples must continue the work of saving the world.
Impact
Way claimed that his favorite author, Grant Morrison and his Doom Patrol , had the greatest impact on the work. He also stated that Pat Macion of ZombieWorld: Champion of the Worm was one of the prototypes of his work. Way said that Edwin Bukovich was his favorite artist, and "his Grendel Tales , like the Bible for drawing" [4] .
Characters
Umbrella Academy
Monocle (Sir Reginald Hargreaves)
An alien disguised as a wealthy entrepreneur and world famous scientist. Adopted all members of the Umbrella Academy. An outstanding inventor (on his account a teleportator, levitator, Umbrella mobile communicator, etc.), Olympic gold medalist, Nobel Prize laureate . He was a rather tough parent for adopted children, forbade calling himself dad, preferring instead the name Monocle. I also numbered the children according to the level of “usefulness” and addressed them not by name, but by the corresponding number.
# 00.01 Cosmoboy (Luther Hargreaves)
Team leader. As a child, he possessed superpower, after a failed expedition to Mars, Monocle had to transplant his head onto the body of a Martian gorilla. His abilities are physical strength and endurance. His body can withstand the vacuum and cold of space, while wearing a helmet. As equipment - a jetpack (jetpack) and a blaster. After graduating from the Academy, he moved to the moon. As it turned out in the Dallas story, Cosmoboy and Number Five are twin brothers.
# 00.02 Kraken (Diego Hargreaves)
The most reckless and rebellious member of the team. The monocle described him as a "brazen jerk." It has the ability to hold your breath for an indefinite time and is able to change the flight path of any object that it will throw (usually knives). There is obvious rivalry between him and Luther, and Diego refuses to accept the leader’s orders. It hunts drug dealers and other criminals, regularly goes on a night patrol. Secretly in love with his adoptive sister Vanya (White Violin).
# 00.03 Hearing (Allison Hargreaves)
Narcissistic nature. It has the ability to instantly change reality through lies. Once she says, “rumor goes that ...”, as all that has been said comes true. After the Academy, she married her boyfriend Patrick, they had a daughter, Claire. After the divorce, Patrick receives full custody of his daughter. She turned out to be vulnerable to loss of voice - without this, she cannot use her ability. In childhood, due to the Doctor of the Terminal, she lost her left hand. Before voice recovery, Allison's left hand is mechanical. The Dallas chapter shows that her hand was also restored [6] .
# 00.04 Session (Klaus Hargreaves)
Showy, moody, gloomy temperament. His abilities are: levitation, telekinesis and communication with the dead, but in order to use them he must take off his shoes. He has tattoos on his palms - the words "Hello" and "Goodbye." Pogo suggests that he took drugs during his teenage years. Klaus was killed by Hazel and Cha-Che in Dallas, but was rejected by both hell and heaven.
# 00.05 Number Five (Fifth)
In childhood, he knew how to move to the future, but could not go back. At the age of 13, he disappeared, leaving for 17 years in the future. Hargreaves warned him that he could never go back. It took him 45 years to find a way to return in due time. During this period, he grew old, but during his return journey in time, his youth returned to him. In fact, his body is stuck at the age of 13, when his brothers and sisters are already 30. Medical studies have shown that he does not observe either cell death or cell growth. The boy claims that there is a direct connection between the Academy and the Apocalypse in the future. In an attempt to go back in time to warn his adoptive siblings, he worked with Temps Aeternalis. He was trained to perform "micro-jumps" in time, allowing him to move faster than the human eye can see. He is considered an "ideal killer." As it turned out in the Dallas story, Cosmoboy and Number Five are twin brothers. Also, Number Five has a mannequin sweetheart named Dolores. [7] .
# 00.06 Horror (Ben Hargreaves)
It has a connection with monsters from other dimensions (most often they appear in the form of tentacles emerging from its body). Died, but there is no information about his death. He erected a monument in front of the Academy. Although he was dead before the start of the series, he is portrayed as a member of the team. Vanya destroys his statue when he destroys the Academy mansion. Later, the memorial was restored along with the statue of Pogo, who died in the same disaster.
# 00.07 White Violin (Vanya Hargreaves)
The most alienated member of the group. Vanya initially does not show any abilities, except for his passion for music. She later writes a book about her hard life at the Academy and the decision to leave. According to the Conductor, leader of the Orchestra of the Damned, she is the Academy’s strongest representative. As a child, Monocle held her back, but they were subsequently released by the Conductor, which ultimately drives her crazy. She is able to release destructive waves of power using a violin.
