About the album
Damn the Torpedoes has a well-known legal dispute. In 1979, Shelter Records (the label on The Heartbreakers) was sold to MCA Records , which displeased Tom Petty. The musician refused to switch to a new label and the company was forced to give in, creating Backstreet Records specifically for him. The title of the album is a reference to Admiral David Farragut ’s phrase “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!”, Uttered by him during the battle in the Mobile Bay . For the team Damn the Torpedoes was a significant step forward. The album hit a record for The Heartbreakers at that time 2nd place on the Billboard 200 [1] . Commercial success exceeded all previous albums, thanks in large part to new producer Jimmy Iovin. Rolling Stone magazine called Damn the Torpedoes “one of the greatest records of the era of landscape rock” [2] , to prove their words, placing the album at 315th place in its list of “ 500 greatest albums of all time ” [3] .
